Apprentice Technician – Forensic Science or Chemistry and Life Sciences

If you are interested in an apprenticeship as a Laboratory Technician then this is a fantastic opportunity to gain an advanced apprenticeship BTEC Diploma in Applied Science, including an NVQ LATA qualification pathway in Educational Science.

You will be based at a University Campus in Chatham, Kent to support the Teaching Support Technicians, academic research projects and enterprise activities. There are two fantastic apprenticeship opportunities available.

Apprentice Technician in the Forensic Science Department is required to:

  • assist in the delivery of specialist and generic forensic practical classes
  • prepare chemical and biological reagents
  • assist the permanent teaching technicians in general laboratory duties
  • carry out general housekeeping duties to ensure laboratories and preparation areas are kept safe and clean
  • operate laboratory equipment (both general and specialist in either the forensic, biological/or chemistry fields)
  • laboratory management
  • assist in the day-to-day operation of the teaching laboratories including; setting up and clearing away equipment before and after practical’s, refilling boxes with clean equipment and consumables, which includes topping up reagent bottles and stock solutions.

Apprentice Technician in the Life Sciences or Chemistry Departments is required to:

  • assist in the delivery of specialist and generic life sciences and chemistry practical classes, prepare chemical and biological reagents
  • assist the permanent teaching technicians in general laboratory duties
  • carry out general housekeeping duties to ensure laboratories and preparation areas are kept safe and clean
  • operate laboratory equipment (both general and specialist in either the biological and/or chemistry fields)
  • laboratory management
  • assist in the day-to-day operation of the teaching laboratories including; setting up and clearing away equipment before and after practical’s, refilling boxes with clean equipment and consumables, which includes topping up reagent bottles and stock solutions

As part of your training you will be shown and taught how to work within the guidelines of the Health and Safety policies and procedures in a laboratory environment covering: COSHH and laboratory risk assessments, good laboratory practice and biological and chemical waste management.

Gain an Advanced Apprenticeship in Applied Science and obtain some enviable work experience in Chatham, Kent. For anyone who sees their future career in Science the Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science is an excellent starting point. It covers a wide range of topics across biology, chemistry and physics and will allow you to acquire a high level of practical laboratory skills from which the theory is then drawn.  If you have basic knowledge of a laboratory environment, are able to work in an efficient and organised manner, have excellent written and oral communication and an appreciation of the importance of health and safety as applied to the laboratory environment then this could be the apprenticeship for you.

The University campus in Chatham is home to a Faculty of Engineering and Science, and also hosts programmes from the Faculty of Education and Health. They have extensive new purpose-built laboratories and research facilities.  Future prospects are excellent with the possibility of ongoing employment beyond the apprenticeship (this is not guaranteed) for the right people.

Please note that the successful applicant must be committed to travelling every week to the day release at college for the entire two years (term time only). The college’s centre is in Sandwich, Kent and you must be able to demonstrate an appropriate and reliable method of travel.

You will gain a recognised qualification and work experience whilst being supported in the workplace by the staff at the university, a dedicated SEAC Apprenticeship Account Manager and a Training Assessor.
